Sometimes she accidentally makes eye contact with the teacher at the wrong moment and suddenly she is the one coordinating everything. If you have ever been the class mom, you will know it is a role that sounds simple but somehow turns into logistics manager, group chat moderator, party planner and emotional support for 25 small humans. And honestly, it is one of those roles you never fully understand until you are in it. The class mom role sounds simple until you are in it. More Than Just Reminders When I first became a class mom, I thought it meant helping organize the odd class gift and maybe reminding parents about a dress-up day. What I did not realise is that you quickly become the bridge between the teacher and the parents, and that comes with a surprising amount of responsibility. • You are the one reminding everyone about teacher gifts. • You are the one coordinating birthday treats. • You are the one collecting money for the end-of-year present that somehow requires fifteen follow-up messages. And of course, you are also the one in the class WhatsApp group gently answering questions that have already been asked… many times before. Somewhere between the reminders, the planning and the occasional chaos, you start to see the real value in the role. Why It Actually Matters Teachers are incredibly busy, and having a parent help coordinate things behind the scenes genuinely makes their lives easier. Something as simple as organizing a group gift, arranging volunteers for a school event, or making sure a child who forgot a snack is not left out can make a big difference in the classroom. You also start to see the small moments that make the effort worth it. The excitement when the class party comes together. The relief on a teacher's face when something has already been organized. The sense of community that builds when parents start helping one another. A Front Row Seat to Their World Being the class mom also gives you a front row seat to your child's little school world. You get to know the other parents. You learn the personalities in the class. You see friendships forming and little milestones happening throughout the year. Of course, there are days when the WhatsApp notifications feel endless and you wonder how a simple message about cupcakes turned into a 57-reply conversation. But most class moms will tell you the same thing. It may be a little chaotic at times, but it is also incredibly rewarding. What It Is Really About At the end of the year, when the teacher thanks you and the kids proudly present their class gift, you realize that the role was never really about organizing things perfectly. It was about helping create a small community around a classroom. And in the busy seasons of parenting, those little communities often end up meaning more than we expect. If you are the class mom this year we see you. And we appreciate you more than you know.
