There's a new generation of moms in the school pick-up line, and they're doing things differently.
Gen Z moms, born from the late 1990s onwards, grew up online. They're the first generation to become parents with TikTok tutorials, mom group chats and a world of opinions in their pocket. And instead of trying to look like they have it all together, many are choosing honesty.
They talk openly about mental health. One global survey found that around 70% of Gen Z moms have sought therapy, far more than older generations. Asking for help isn't seen as failing. It's seen as wise.
They expect partners to share the load. Nearly 60% of Gen Z moms say household tasks are shared fairly at home. The "default parent" model is being quietly questioned.
They protect time for themselves. Gen Z moms are more likely to carve out at least an hour a day for self-care, without apologising for it.
They're realistic about money. With the cost of living in South Africa rising, many are choosing smaller families and leaning on grandparents for support. That's not a step back. It's a village, done the modern way.
Of course, every generation of moms has had to learn as they go. Gen Z simply says the hard parts out loud.
Whether you're 22 or 42, there's something to take from that: motherhood doesn't need to look perfect to be good. It just needs to be real.
