If you can avoid the long Home Affairs queues… do it. Applying through a bank is honestly one of those small wins that makes you feel like you've got your life together as a mom.
It's quicker, calmer, and far more manageable with a baby or toddler in tow.
Here's exactly how to do it.
First Things First
You'll be applying for a Child Passport, which is valid for 5 years.
Bank branches that offer this service work together with Home Affairs (http://www.dha.gov.za), but you cannot just walk in. Everything is done by booking.
Step 1: Register on eHome Affairs
Start here: the eHome Affairs website — http://www.dha.gov.za
You'll:
• Create a profile (as the parent)
• Add your child as an applicant
• Fill in all their details
Take your time here. Doing this properly is what makes the actual appointment smooth.
Step 2: Choose a Bank Branch
You can apply at selected branches of:
• FNB
• Standard Bank
• Nedbank
• Absa
Not all branches offer this service, so you'll choose from the available ones when booking.
Mom tip: Pick a time that works around naps. This one decision can make or break your experience.
Step 3: Book Your Appointment
Once everything is filled in:
• Select your bank branch
• Choose a time slot
• Confirm your booking
You'll also be guided to make payment online (or at the bank, depending on setup).
No booking = no service. They are strict about this.
Step 4: What You Need to Bring
This is where you don't want surprises.
Bring:
• Your child (yes, they must come with you)
• Your child's unabridged birth certificate
• Both parents' ID documents (originals + copies)
If one parent isn't attending:
• A consent affidavit from the absent parent
• A copy of their ID
Having everything ready means you're in and out without stress.
Step 5: What Happens at the Bank
The process is surprisingly quick.
At your appointment:
• Your child's photo will be taken digitally
• Biometrics are captured (if age-appropriate)
• Documents are checked and submitted
It's clean, calm, and far less overwhelming than a government office.
Mom survival tip: snacks, a small toy, and maybe your phone. Even the calmest toddler can lose patience quickly.
How Long It Takes
Passports usually take about 7–21 working days.
You'll get an SMS when it's ready. Collection may be at the bank or a Home Affairs office, depending on your booking.
A Little Mom-to-Mom Advice
Book the earliest slot you can, go in with everything prepared, and don't overthink it.
The bank route really does take away so much of the stress. It's one of those admin tasks that feels big… until it's done.
And walking out knowing your little one has a passport on the way? Such a good feeling.
One step closer to those family holidays we're always dreaming about.
