What Not to Buy Your Child’s Teacher This Year (and What They’ll Actually Love)

Can we talk about teacher gifts for a second? Every year, somewhere around the end of November, I find myself standing in a shop aisle holding a mug that says “Thank You for Helping Me Grow” and wondering whether this is really the best I can do. My child’s teacher has spent the whole year teaching, comforting, encouraging and quite possibly wiping noses. I want to say thank you in a way that actually means something. So I did what any mom would do. I asked around. I chatted to teacher friends, moms in our WhatsApp groups and a few honest teachers who were happy to spill the tea. Here’s what I learned. The mugs have to go. Teachers get so many of them. One teacher told me she has an entire cupboard at home dedicated to mugs she’ll never use. The same goes for “World’s Best Teacher” ornaments and little trinkets. They’re lovely in theory, but they quickly turn into clutter. Go easy on the candles and lotions. Scent is so personal, and what smells heavenly to us might give someone else a headache. Allergies are a real thing too. Chocolates are sweet, but... By the last day of term, most staffrooms look like a chocolate factory exploded. Your box might get lost in the pile. So what do teachers love? Almost every teacher said the same thing: a handwritten note. A few heartfelt words from you, plus a drawing or a sentence from your child about their favourite memory, is the gift they keep for years. Some even have a box at home full of them. Vouchers come a close second. A grocery, coffee or book voucher lets them treat themselves to something they actually want. And if you’re a class mom, consider organising a group gift. Thirty parents chipping in a little can add up to something really special. One more idea: many teachers buy classroom supplies with their own money, so a little box of stationery for next year can be such a thoughtful touch. At the end of the day, it truly is the thought that counts. A little intention just makes sure that thought lands where it matters. Got a teacher gift idea that went down a treat?
